#8 Hands at Work

這個星期天，我們的教會請了一位南非傳道人來做特別講員。他跟我們介紹他的基督教非盈利組織，叫 “Hands at Work” 的目標, 遠景和價值觀 (www.handsatwork.org)。Hands at work 現在在八個撒哈拉以南非洲國家的農村幫助最窮的貧困社區，幫他們照顧窮困與臨終的人, 寡婦, 和孤兒。這位傳道人讓我想起我在大學主修的非洲研究，和提醒我爲什麽會對非洲感到興趣。。。幫助迷失和貧困的非洲人民。我的教會領袖希望跟Hands at Work成爲合作的夥伴，希望能派教會成員傳教士到非洲，服務社區和分享福音。我真的對Hands at Work這個機構感到興奮,希望我有機會能跟教會的弟兄姐妹一起去非洲服事！

#7 “我爸是李剛”

上個禮拜，在西安的老師與我討論法律的不公平，是關於中國最近的新聞“我爸是李剛”。一位大學生酒醉駕車，撞到兩個人，其中一位死了。但這位酒醉駕車者說了一句“我爸是李剛”，他爸爸原來是公安局的副局長。現在全國的老百姓都在注意這件事的結果。

老實說，我不太了解中國的法律制度。但是在美國的法律制度不允許這種兇手逃出法律的制裁，尤其有關人命的案子。如果被判決有罪, 是非要進監牢不可。在美國，我們的法庭不只有法官來主持，主要有陪審團來判決。因此，如果法院的官僚腐敗，陪審團的老百姓還可以做出公正的決定。

#6 美國政府和非營利性的動物收容的分別

我覺得美國對動物和寵物的態度跟別的國家不一樣。在美國，我們真的很愛動物，大部分的人家裏也養過寵物。每一個縣或者小鎮的政府都有特別的動物控制中心，動物控制中心提供以下的服務（從洛杉磯縣網站）：

• 搶救生病或受傷的動物
• 捕獲流浪動物
• 重聚丟失的寵物與主人
• 執行動物叫聲噪音的投訴
• 調查有關於虐待動物的投訴
• 從公共場所去除死動物 
• 提供住処給遺失與無家可歸的寵物 
• 領養無家可歸的寵物
• 檢疫革除有危險的狗
• 緊急應對火災，洪水等災害
• 查和許可的商業設施，如動物的寵物店，狗房，養殖設施，馬戲團，牛仔競技表演，動物園和野生動物。分等級為 A，B，C或F分別給予設施，協助消費者選擇信譽好的商家
• 低成本疫苗和免費芯片
• 按照國家和縣政府的法律，發給寵物許可證

雖然政府和非營利性的動物收容所的目的很相似，但運作不一樣。為了控制不斷生養的動物種群，如果沒人來領養或找丟失的寵物，政府管理的收容所經過一段時間必須要安樂死。政府的設施比較簡單，動物的籠子不太舒服，只給牠們最基本的必需品，如食物，水，和一條毯子（有時）。因此很多人覺得政府管理的收容所的動物看起來很可憐。

非營利性的收容所的運作跟政府的不太一樣。每個非營利的收容所有自己的規定，也不讓動物安樂死。如果他們的籠子不夠或場地不夠，他們不一定會接受所有的動物。非營利的收容所平常有比較多的志願者，因此動物會得到更多的照顧。可是非營利收容所的領養費比政府的高一點兒，因為他們需要收入來維持運作。

我認爲，雖然非營利性動物收容所照顧他們的動物會比較好，但政府動物收容所的被遺棄的寵物更需要有人來領養，因爲過了一段的時間之後，他們可能會被安樂死。

#5 Santorini: 希臘最安祥的火山口

如果我一生再只能選一個地方去旅遊，我一定會想回到Santorini島欣賞希臘地中海的美麗與安詳的日落和風景。兩年前去歐洲時，彎到Santorini逗留了兩天兩夜，可是對我和我的高中好友來説，實在不夠時間好好欣賞這個小島。第一天我們從雅典的比雷埃夫斯(Piraeus)港口搭了渡輪，乘四個小時的船到Santorini的Fira城鎮。我們的飯店在島的北邊，Fira在島的西邊，所以一下渡船就搭公共汽車到Oia。我們的小別墅就在破火山口上，白天晚上都有超美的海景，費用也算是比較便宜：http://www.oia-santorini.gr/lenas-house/home.htm 。Oia的日落是全世界最有名而且最美的日落之一，每個夏天黃昏，幾百個旅客都會搭車到Oia欣賞美景。別的城市也有特別的景點，像Perissa的沙灘是黑色的和Akrotiri有名的紅沙灘。我們沒時間周遊訪問每一個景點，希望有一天有機會回到Santorini好好享受。

#4 Memories of Daiso ... (大創生活百貨美好的紀念！)

回看，臺北最好的購物記憶就是在"大創生活百貨"。臺灣的三十九元商品店真的跟美國的商品店不一樣。雖然價錢差不多，可是品質真的好多了。美國一元商店賣的貨品質量很差，種類也不像臺灣的那麽多。 因爲大部分的一元店開在比較不好的地區裡，而大多的美國人認爲一元店的東西很爛，根本沒去光顧過。

在台北的大創生活百貨(Daiso)，每個東西多是三十九元台幣，等於1.21美元。三十九元店買的商品五花八門；比方所你需要的拖鞋、筷子、寵物玩具、五金、或者口罩，大創都有。我每次去逛臺北的三十九元店都玩得很過癮。 這幾年來，全球經濟越來越不景氣，可見一美元/三十九元店會越來越受消費者的歡迎。我家附近就快要開一所一元店，生意一定會很好。

#3 新的工作在cramping我的風格！

有關於我上個周日講的旅遊機會。。。

上個星期我以爲我年底前能去紐約／波士頓，印度，或者臺灣玩玩兒，可是現在開始新工作以後，看清了我的這夢想真得不能實現。這新的工作是在以零售業的PetSmart店内獸醫診所打工，因此我每個星期的工作日程都不一樣，診所經理只提前一個禮拜安排工人下個星期的工作時間。我也問過同事們，如果診所一年只休兩天假（感恩節和聖誕節），他們是怎麽安排假期。即使想某天請假也不一定會讓給你，因爲與許多零售商店業務類似，以新老來決定誰可以休假， 不是以誰先提交休假申請。因而，我下兩個月不可能出去旅遊。好可惜！

這份工作真得很辛苦，薪水賺得不多，休假的時間也很少。可是沒辦法，就是事實，現在的就業市場差極了！情況不像以前一樣，可不能隨便辭職，目前我一定要留在這兒打工，等我找到新的工作才能辭職。

#2 太多機會，不夠時間

我發現這幾年來，有很多機會旅遊，可以去很多地方玩，不僅在國內也在國外的都市。就過去這兩年，去了四個洲：歐洲，非洲，北美，和亞洲。加之，剛從臺灣回來不久，就出現了有幾個旅遊的機會，也都可以在兩個月內出發和完成。下個月會有機會跟些朋友去紐約和波士頓玩六天。他們邀請我那個時候我覺得真是很方便，能一邊跟朋友旅游，也能拜訪住在波士頓的好朋友，也能用我的飛行里程積分買一般免費的往返航班。


感恩節后兩個星期也出現了機會去印度的新德裡。這個機會是跟我的教會宣教團隊一起去參觀Passion Movement International (http://www.pmingo.org)的組織，因爲我們的教會要開始跟PMI合作，每年派人到新德裡幫助PMI的員工。


最後，這個十二月底可能再要去臺灣。由於我上次回美國沒趕上飛機，航空公司還留著我的一程返航機票。因此父母就決定冬天放假的時候去臺灣完，也能同時用我的一程機票。


有這麽多的機會旅遊，我真的不夠時間（也沒有那麽多錢）去加入所有的行程。要好好考慮考慮。

＃1 第一次旅遊的回憶

我最近兩年才開始出國旅遊。我從小，父母只喜歡在美國國内旅行，所以我到三年前(2008)才有出國的回憶。我記得準備第一次出國旅行的時候，心情真愉快。那個時候我很突然的決定跟好友一起去歐洲玩。我在出發前兩個禮拜才決定，也沒忙亂地準備出遊。我的好友已經計劃了一切，讓我出發得時候覺得既輕鬆又逍遙，她去哪兒，我也跟得去哪兒。

我記得第一次上飛機的時候感覺又緊張又高興。我們在歐洲玩了兩個星期玩得很過癮，感受到希臘浪漫的氣氛，和英國熱閙的氣氛。我們自由地環遊歐洲，也交了很多來自各國的朋友。我們都覺得很快樂，可好玩了！

那兩個星期玩得真高興。回到美國的時候，心情很愉快，很輕鬆。旅客回家以後往往不像回到以前的生活，但是非回不可，等下次的旅行機會再享受旅行的樂趣。

i feel like i always forget the little things that happen on these exciting, jam-packed trips. so i'm going to make personal notes of the silly things that happen on the trip. most are more "you-had-to-be-there" moments, so sorry if y'all get uber-confused!

WEEK2: summary

oops, totally neglected my blog, and i admit, not on accident.... actually, life's been busy since the new classes started 2 weeks ago, feels it's been at least 1 month already. ugh. studying SO much. i could've swore i graduated already... seems like silly me stupidly signed up for college again. haven't studied this much since that dang aquaculture engineering class i also stupidly signed up for...hmm i see a trend... anywayyyy, i digress.

hokay, so. WEEK 2 FESTIVITIES:

• since my last post we've made noodles from scratch from the famous Chef Liu (ranked #1 for his beef noodle soup):

• SUPER YUMMY. he also taught us how to make Zhajiang noodles 炸醬麵. A+

• we also when to Yingge 鶯歌, famous for its pottery, & made our own cups!

• oh, and LOTS OF STUDYING

我一天的生活

2010.07.01

在北加州念大學的時候，我早上七點半就起床了。我先上衛生間，洗澡刷牙，然後自己做早餐。吃完早餐後，化完妝就出門。有的時候沒時間的話，就不做早飯，拿一兩片面包和咖啡就可以了。

第一個星期的作文：自傳

2010.06.27

大家好。 我姓吳，口天吳。我叫Jessica。我的中文名字是吳傳慈，傳道的“傳”，仁慈的“慈”。

我二十二嵗，一九八七年出生的，屬兔。我在南加州出生的，住在南加州一個小城市叫Cerritos。我的家裏只有三個人：爸爸，媽媽，和我。我的爸爸從臺灣來的，媽媽是廣東人從上海來到美國的。我的爺爺奶奶和外婆也都住在南加州。

if you haven't noticed by now, i like to tell my tales via pictures rather than words. but what can i say about this past week... 

the eye infection, diarrhea, and sickness (cold) are pretty much gone, praise the Lord! but i'm sure i'll be getting occasional visits from mr. runnies. we've had 2 culture classes so far: 1) calligraphy and seal-carving ("chops" or stamps), and 2) hand-made noodles + cooking zhajiang noodles. [see pictures below]

we'll be starting real chinese classes tomorrow (thursday, july 1st, 2010). by "real," i mean learning lots of new vocab, grammar, and semantics. our CSULB group will be split up according to our placement scores & speaking skills.. sad. but its ok, we'll still be together in our first class with our CSULB teacher, cao laoshi (曹老師). 曹老師 is super cool. she's hilarious, super easy-going, stylish, and very much a mother hen. she took me to the eye doctor when i had that nasty conjunctivitis-esque infection. i hope my local teacher is half as cool as her, and not an authentic chinese teacher... otherwise i'll get beaten everyday. JUSTKIDDINGNOTREALLY!

my taiwan buddy/tutor is cool too. the 12 of us CSULB SLI (Cal State Long Beach, Strategic Language Initiative) kids each got assigned a taiwanese college student to help us with homework, speech, and navigation around the city. basically they're at our disposal... muahaha. a group of us will be going to see Toy Story 3 (wan ju zong dong yuan 玩具總動員3) with our tutor buddies on monday. (i hope they dont dub everything...)

the dorms are nice here. they put us in special dorms, probably because we're spoiled american brats. but we totally got the hook ups here! a/c, cable (w/HBO!), mini-frig, own bathroom, 2 to a room, wireless internet, non-bunk beds, maid service. its nice. i was surprised. ghana was way different: 6 girls to 1 room, 1 bathroom, crappy internet in the computer room, obviously no tv or frig)... but honestly, as of right now, i like ghana more. maybe taiwan will let up its attack on my immune system and crank up the fun dial. the food is aite. i like the sweets, bakery breads, and drinks, but actual meal food has been a letdown. i don't particularly crave any of the salty foods i've eaten, with exception of the handmade noodles. if anyone has recommendations for restaurants/food in taipei, please do tell! 

the weather's been icky. it pretty much rains every afternoon/evening... 100% humidity, 80s-90s (°F). my acne has blown up, probably from the air quality. one of the tutor buddies said eating snake is good for fighting acne....

 i sure hope i'll learn to like taipei more in the coming weeks. praise God for air conditioning.

我對臺灣過敏

我的身體真的不喜歡臺灣．星期三晚上，我的眼睛發炎，紅紅的．星期四，曹老師和我的臺灣輔導員／接待學生帶我到眼科去撿查．李醫生很好，也會說英文．他說我的眼睛不是我以爲的"pink eye (conjunctivitis),"就是我一只眼睛太多，細菌近去了．好消息，可是我這幾天不能帶隱形眼鏡，正痛苦．我最不喜歡戴眼鏡因爲我的睫毛會打擾我的眼睛．
現在我的眼睛差不多好了，但是我有一點兒生病．喉嚨不舒服．這個周末我會多喝水多休息．希望下個禮拜會好一點，能出去玩兒．

Greetings from the future.. muahaha

.. I love saying that. Anyway, so been in Taipei for about 3 days now.  The weather is wack; humid, crazy thunderstorms, heat. The people are pretty nice; got lost for 2 hours and asked about 30 people how to find Evangel. Food is CHEAP <3. A/C is my best friend. My roommate keeps things lively.
